Centre for Quantum Metamaterials MIEM HSE Has Organized the New Regular Scientific Seminar Which Will Cover Wide Range of Topics, From Quantum Metamaterials To Classical Materials Science.

The first seminar was held on June 6, 2024. Tairzhan Karabasov, a 4th year post-graduate student of the MIEM of the Higher School of Economics, made a presentation. His report was covering new hybrid functional materials superconductor/topological insulator/ferromagnet and their use to create superconducting diodes.

Diodes are one of the key components of electronic circuits. Today they are made of semiconductors. However, a new technological field has recently emerged – superconducting electronics, where circuit elements are made from superconductors. Such devices have no resistance and are therefore much more energy efficient. In addition, they are controlled by quantum physics, which gives them unique properties. Recently, superconducting structures have been discovered that can work as diodes.
The seminar covered the physics of the diode effect in superconducting devices. This effect occurs if two basic symmetries are broken: inversion symmetry of space and symmetry with respect to the reversal of time. Therefore, the diode effect is manifested in heterostructures containing a superconductor, a ferromagnet and a topological insulator. As an example, a diode consisting of superconductor and ferromagnetic layers on the surface of a topological insulator was considered, and it was shown how magnetization controls current transmission.
We invite all employees of the HSE MIEM laboratories and just all interested people to send their suggestions on possible topics and speakers for the seminar to Andrey Sergeevich Vasenko avasenko@hse.ru (coordinator of the seminar) or Pavel Mikhailovich Marychev pmarychev@hse.ru (Secretary of the seminar).
