Key Members of the Brazilian Team

Mauro Doria

Project Leader, Full Professor, University of Rio de Janeiro

Earned his doctoral degree at Yale University in the USA. He is a recognized specialist in describing topological quantum systems. At the institute, he oversees the theory of the interaction between superconductivity and magnetism.
Luis Ghivelder

Full Professor, University of Rio de Janeiro

Earned his doctoral degree at the University of Cambridge in England. He heads the experimental laboratory for research on superconductivity and magnetism. He is the coordinator of one of the divisions of the Institute of Physics.
Filipe Pinheiro

Associate Professor, University of Rio de Janeiro

He completed his postgraduate studies at the Joseph Fourier University in France. He leads research on the opto-electronic properties of materials. He is the coordinator of the master's and doctoral programmes at the Institute of Physics.

The scientific focus of the Brazilian team is the physics of superconductivity, magnetism, and metamaterials. In particular, they study the emergence and role of topologically non-trivial quantum states, which is closely intertwined with the work of scientists at our centre. Our joint international collaboration project will lead to synergy in these research areas and their enhancement, and possibly to genuine breakthroughs.

The Brazilian team possesses substantial experimental capabilities, which complement the theoretical directions of the centre well. The combination of experiment and theory will lead to a qualitative improvement in research and an expansion of its thematic scope.

Principal Researchers of the Centre for Quantum Metamaterials

François Peeters

Scientific Supervisor

Professor of the University of Antwerp, distinguished international expert in the field of condensed matter physics, and member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences. He is the author of over 1,000 publications in high-ranking journals, the Editor-in-Chief of Solid State Communications, and the editor of other prestigious publications. Prof. Peeters has supervised over 100 PhD students to defence.
Alexei Vagov

Director of the Centre

Professor, internationally recognised expert in the fields of superconductivity physics and quantum optics. He defended his candidate's dissertation at the Australian National University and earned his doctoral degree in Germany. He is the author of over 180 scientific papers. He is a fellow of the prestigious Brazilian Government programme 'Science Without Borders.' He is a visiting professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil.
Arkady Shanenko

Chief Research Fellow

Professor, internationally recognised expert in the fields of superconductivity and quantum gases. He has published over 170 scientific papers. He defended his candidate's dissertation at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna near Moscow and earned a PhD from the University of São Paulo in Brazil. Prof. Shanenko was a research scientist at the University of Antwerp for many years and later a professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil. He is currently a professor at the HSE University and one of the founders of the centre.
Tiago Teixeira Saraiva

Research Fellow

Associate Professor, PhD from the Federal University of Pernambuco (Recife).

The Centre for Quantum Metamaterials possesses unique experience and broad connections within the Brazilian academic environment. The centre conducts a substantial programme of theoretical research, the results of which are published in international high-ranking journals. The quality of the centre's research work is confirmed by a high citation level of 222 times.
